A powerful Art Nouveau pendant by Philippe Wolfers for Wolfers Frères is highly symbolic- depicting the Archangel St. Michael defeating Satan in dramatic and, dare we say it, beautiful fashion! The elongated oval form is framed by the sinuous foliate and architectural motifs so typical of the Art Nouveau era, with beautifully modelled drapery and a rich patina that accentuates every contour, creating welcome light, shadow and drama.

Bearing the artist’s monogram and the date 1903, and stamped Wolfers Freres. Our research indicates this piece was originally made by the artist and sold by the now-household name Longchamps.

It embodies the elegance and dynamism of the period while remaining effortlessly wearable, and of course, we simply adore the symbolism of good conquering evil.

HALLMARKS: Since we have dated this piece as being made before 1950, a hallmark is not required in order for it to be sold in line with UK hallmarking legislation.

Condition

EXCELLENT: The high-relief medallion is crisp with minimal surface wear and a pleasing, even patina; edges and high points show only light abrasion consistent with age. The jump ring is secure with no visible breaks or repairs.
